50 Cent Is The Devil, Letter From God Says So

God is now controlling the music industry. Brian "Head" Welch, former-korn-member-turned-jesus-freak was told by God to write a song for 50 cent.
Welch writes that he attempted to deliver his song to 50 on a recent trip to New York, but when he was unable to contact the rapper, he settled for giving his lyrics — plus a letter he'd written to 50 — to famed jewelry maker Jacob the Jeweler. He also concludes his open letter by extending an invite to 50 to discuss Christianity or just to snack on some popcorn.
This shit is getting really fucking weird - popcorn? Jacob the Jeweler as mediator? I hope 50 shoots his skinny ass. The 50 cent and Head messageboards must be filling up with mashups (did i just write mashups?) as we speak.

Doo Doo Brown
The Supeficial has a revolting little tale from the days of Bennifer.
"Jennifer Lopez was there with Ben, but was hiding out in his room the whole time. At first when I heard Ben kissing her hello, I immediately went to turn the volume down on my headphones. But then they started kissing loudly and making noises, and I felt so guilty, but I left the sound up, and heard Jennifer saying 'I love you baby, I love you... You wanna get busy, baby. You wanna get busy?'"
"Then I heard Ben reply, .'Are you sure you're feelin' better? I don't want you to shit on me again.'"

Blame 9/11 On You Know Who
Evil-man Jerry Falwell is in critical condition. Thank God. I was going to put up a picture of his ugly ass, but I was afraid Jessica Rabbit would throw up all over this post. Flashback to 2001, when he blamed gays, feminists and lesbians for September 11th.
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen."
And yet another quotable banger:
"I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!"
The worst of the worst:
"AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals."

You Are A Fucking Cunt

This is no Roy Ayers, but the amusement level is still skyhigh. Ever played with a fully stocked MPC drunk as hell, getting really into it? You're thinking "yeah man, i'm finally making some beats!" Except you wake up in the morning and realize you were fucking really wasted? I guess I'm comparing this link to that, only I would feel pretty good the next morning. That being said, click the link, enjoy digital xylophoning (click, click) - then grab the Roy Ayers freebie. Make sure to turn up your speakers.

pretty bitches ain't down to fuck nobody poor and shit

Combat Jack over at ByronCrawford.com is busy putting up his "Top 5 gulliest moments he's experienced first hand in the music industry" - and # 5 is a killer. A Long Island outcast, blacklisted by record labels for the longest, RA the Rugged Man lives grimy. As you read this, remember that RA once did a joint with Biggie - and that in reference to the Suffolk County lowlife, Big is quoted as saying "I thought I was the illest."
Anyways, one day, dude comes to my office with some skanky (but fuckable) white trailer trash biker chick. We're discussing business and this chick isn't saying an effin word. About 25 minutes into our meeting, R.A. asks me what I think of the chick, and I tell him she's decent....
When you're done marvelling at that, be sure to check out this interview. RA tells some amazing stories about Big, Mobb Deep, Neptunes, etc. A sample:
Whore Pit sounds a lot fouler than it is, but it is just a studio, and in the studio, we f***ed. Biggie came out to the studio, and he had his own little chick in the bathroom with him. Next thing you know, he’s walking out the bathroom, and water is pouring out of the toilet. Condoms are overflowing. He f***ed both the toilet and the plumbing up while boning the chick.

Pun Mysteries Revealed
For your Saturday evening enjoyment:
Rapper Big Punisher was nearly 700 pounds at the time of his death Monday, according to the deputy medical examiner of Westchester County, N.Y. "He had an enlarged heart, about three times the normal size," Dr. Louis Roh said. "That is not healthy."
And it just gets better from there.
Ayres found that for us. To reward him - and yourself - go to his party tonight. He's turning Savales into a home with Cosmo Baker. Flyer here.

Octopus Moonwalk
Hawaii's delve1der directs our attention to this marvelous phenomenon: underwater bipedal locomotion.
Two tiny species of tropical octopus have demonstrated a remarkable disappearing trick. They adopt a two-armed 'walk' that frees up their remaining six limbs to camouflage them as they slink away from trouble.
But really, you got to see this to believe it. Video links here and here.

Schiavo Scorecard: Reps 0, Dems -1, Human Dignity -50,000
Washington Post's Richard Cohen re: Congressional intervention in the Schiavo case:
But for me the real loser was the Democratic Party. It showed that it's almost totally without leadership. If there is a national figure (other than Frank) who stood up and took on the GOP in this matter, his -- or her -- name does not come to mind. In the Senate, oddly enough, it was Virginia's John Warner who pointed out that he opposed the bill -- and he's a Republican, for goodness' sake. The Democrats were nowhere.

Banksy couldn't get his works into the top NY Museums, so he did it himself.
Dressed as a British pensioner, over the last few days Banksy entered each of the galleries and attached one of his own works, complete with authorative name plaque and explanation. He says - "This historic occasion has less to do with finally being embraced by the fine art establishment and is more about the judicious use of a fake beard and some high strength glue." Banksy continues -"They're good enough to be in there, so I don't see why I should wait"

Posters

Inspired by Rory's new poster for his upcoming party (TORONTO YELL), I sussed out this massive online gallery of show posters.
The cumulative effect of wandering happily through so many posters is kind of like standing on every cool-kid street corner in North America at once. It's like one telephone pole for the whole hemisphere, and EVERYONE'S got a show tonight. A real pleasant visual blast. The posters are wild: some are excellent, some are pleasantly precious, some are real nice, some are spooky and sad, and some are (inevitably) a nightmare.
But since the site's so huge, it's super interesting to just click around and see what's good. There's even one for Lil' Kim. Surprised not to see young Catch in the building, cause you know he was - and remains - real nice with this shit.

LEAN
The State of Texas takes on the purple. Shit gets good at about page 9. Definitely check page 13, when the State breaks down the science of candycoating:
Regardless, participants said, one should "coat the paper before rolling and it makes a good burn. You could dunk the ends instead, but it'll flame up on you" (19). Nyquil is a recommended substitute when no codeine cough syrup is available (5). According to the same informant, "You can also make a candycoated fry stick, but it's not as good a trip as a regular fry stick." Candyblunts, however, have universal appeal: "white, brown, Chinese, Iranians, Africans - everybody smokes em" (5).
Meanwhile, the online battle about what's really sizzurp rages hard. Some dude from Canada writes:
"you fools down south got it all wrong...in canada we use rectal promethazine suppositories to get properly throwd...just shove a couple pills up your ass, light a blunt and it should kick in about 30 mins...no need to mix it with sprite or whateva...what ya kno about that"

Malnu Man & Ja Cohen from Burncopy - aka 424 Sound Monster - have done been doing this here MIDI thing in a very big and downloadable way. Their 2003 (foresight! prescience!) mix sensation Blazin' Blip Blop And Blar & Blee "(re)unites the voices of renowned rap and R&B performers with the faceless musicians who create the ringtones that are broadcasted over cellphones worldwide" - and it sounds lovely enough to blow up Hitler's face.

DeLorean Dead

Automaker John Z. DeLorean died today at age 80. Even though his company ate it in 1983, only lasting 3 years and putting out just 9,000 cars, his name is synonymous with time-travel and a bugged-out Christopher Lloyd.
I didn't know DeLorean crashed and burned so spectacularly:
DeLorean's company collapsed in 1983, a year after he was arrested in Los Angeles, accused in a sting of conspiring to sell $24 million of cocaine to salvage his venture. DeLorean used an entrapment defense to win acquittal on the drug charges in 1984, despite a videotape in which he called a suitcase full of cocaine "good as gold."

D Is The New C
Is it me, or were we just talking about this?
As the non-gentrified stretches below 96th Street shrink, there remains Avenue D, the eastern boundary of the East Village that still lives up to its "D is for Death" image, at least among those in the apartment market. Reports the NYT City section, "There is nary a bar in sight. Not a single boutique. The handful of restaurants serve tostones and chicharones, not goat cheese tapas or tuna tartare." The horror... the horror.

Cut Copy Killing It
Checked out Cut Copy's first U.S. show last night at Crash Mansion. Sure it was three skinny white guys wearing tight clothes, but this was a little different. These guys were really humble and you could really feel their anxiety and excitement performing for the first time in NY. So what did they do? Killed it, absolutely killed it. They're MPC fiends, they switch instruments on the fly, and play their guitars in the audience. All in all, an awesome show. Hopefully these guys see some greater success in the future, because they deserve it. There was also a celeb sighting: Famke Janssen.

Spring Break

As of 12:20 PM EST, your boy has officially made it to "Spring 2005 Academic Recess" - AKA SPRING BREAK HOLLER. Don't get it twisted though - my Spring Break will look way more like this than like this. Reminds me of my old grade school spring breaks, which were invariably spent:
(a) playing video games for days,
(b) playing football in the parking lot across the street (Black Rock yell!) and
(c) desperately trying to figure out what being a teenager was going to be like by soaking up hours and hours of vicarious MTV Spring Break experience.
By the end of sixth grade spring break, I was almost happy to go back to school. Things done changed. Quick round up, cause I'm bout to get my Friday record shop on:
· Via party tonight. Me and Jones doing it extra huge. Come through.
· FBI says Biggie case officially closed. "Who shot Biggie Smalls? If we don't get them, they gon get us all..."
· MTV Smut Peddlers! Parents Television Council vs. MTV Spring Break 2004. Read out loud for best effect.
· Extra big shout to Chris over at lemon-red for holding the world down with such quality mp3s. Like every day. Makes me wish I had my old Jeep back.
· Yellaboy and the Street Pharmacy fam come through with about a billion doses of the slow syruppy shit.
· Been out for a minute, but I am really feeling the beat under 40 Cal on this License to Kill shit. Heat. (Link via Ayres.)
· Finally, welcome Miss Jessica to the stencil fam. Remember that she can't help it. She's just drawn that way.

Favorite so far is the open letter to Andre 3000. So necessary.* Shout to dudes over there for getting it in with style and grace.
* Shit, I remember when my man from FADER was over in the dorm room at the turn of the century, playing me cuts off the advance copy of Stankonia, talking bout how Dre was channeling Jimi in dreams and about to play him in a movie. Five years later & I'm like, huh?

Our boy P has some grisly tales from this line (smashed bodies, Russian prostitutes), and last night the G took another victim. Patrick Elasik, 26, who co-founded Mass Appeal, died on contact with the third rail (it's electric). He was crossing the tracks after he realized he had entered on the wrong side. Very sad news, RIP.

Welcome To The Web

I remember when I took some HTML classes at school, and one of the first amazing and super advanced hypertext markup language coding structures they teach you is the concept of tables. Tables are useful when properly implemented, but just like frames, they can turn very very ugly. Obviously someone had a shitload of fun making this. If you visit the main page, you'll be treating to some other outstanding HTML goodies.

Science: Working Hard For YOU!

Scientists at Dartmouth have figured out why you secretly like Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Apparently there's a "brain itch" involved. Love that.
In other news, scientists at Ottawa's National Research Council have been investigating snow's unique acoustic properties. As a kid, I built "snow chairs" in my backyard after Buffalo blizzards and stared up at the puprle/orange night sky for as long as I could take the cold. Thus, I can independently confirm the special silence offered by fresh snow without equivocation: it's true!

8 Years Later

I posted what I believe what his greatest live performance of all time a few weeks back, and I think it's important to revisit that MP3. In my opinion, it's greatest of all time, hands down. They're so blown away by his verses, they let him start swearing on live radio. Biggie simply changed the entire landscape of hip-hop, and while it's sad he's gone - we have to be happy for his indelible imprint, which will be around forever.

Only A Temporary Delay
Dusk and I took a long walk deep past Poland, and into Mob country, almost crossing the river to enter the next body of land - Queens. While we saw a great many odd and depressing things along the way, the best Greenpoint item du jour was found the day before, along scenic McGuinness Boulevard. Before you click on the thumbnail to see the larger version - I apologize for the camera phone quality and the god awful Photoshop job that may confuse rather than aid the viewer. With that being said, this billboard had one of the most amazing typos I've ever seen. It read "What I could smile before I was born."
Click for larger versionA truly deep question that can be interpreted a number of ways. Some typographical changes after the jump.
"What? I could smile before I was born?"
"What I could smile, before I was born?"
"What I could smile before. I was born."
"What! I could smile before I was born?"
"What, I? Could smile? Before I was born?"
OK. The idiocy stops here.

Like A Lion

Filthy out there, man. I know I'm playing the role of the Flanders next door, steady spouting pat weather observations (Cold enough for ya? Holy crap!) - but rain into snow in under two hours? Like my man said, that's grossbuckets. I dug up some real colorful Doppler jpegs for you, but shit is too depressing to put up, especially after yesterday's Disney-springtime daydream.
Over in London, though, life is balmy - as long as your eyes are closed and you're listening to samples of Radioclit's new mixtape. The Clit - aka Johan and Kool DJ Tron - are very thorough and very worth your attention. (Plus they're certified quality, endorsed by them and them.) They're wild and untamed: one time they dropped a midi version of "Sweet Child o' Mine" in the middle of some crunk Britney Spears shit and I've been checking for them ever since.
Inquiring minds can scope snippets from Johan and Tron at the website. They've promised to put up new clips every week, and the whole mix drops March 21.

Advance Notice

Fifty-five degrees is prettying up the city real nice. Maybe I'm willfully hallucinatory, but I thought I saw that neon green spring shimmer on the branches of trees this morning in the West Village...?
Carrying that spring quickstep into the upcoming weekend is crucial, because right now the forecast says 38 and snowy come Saturday. In that blessed spirit of hope/denial, come through this Friday when those Via dudes relaunch their whole game and introduce their new shirt lineup. I'll be playing records with Jones, and we'll be joined by the Cap'n himself as well as the dude Boon.
Should be big fun; these are some talented dudes. I've seen their new designs (water buffaloes, holler!) and they are a very, very good look.
In case you missed the first two links, flyer for Friday is here.

D-Nice
D-Nice of BDP fame is online and kicking the whole riddle. Extremely entertaining. The following excerpt is D on djing, but be sure to check the waffle house entry.
Now, this guy was either too young to know, or too old and senile to remember, that in my past life, I was a rapper; and that I intentionally said my name 32 times in one song so that people would never forget who I was and what I did. I looked him in his eyes and with that old Bronx b-boy dialect; I quoted that great Negro poet Bone Crusher and said, “Yo B, I ain’t neva scared!” I grabbed my CDs, walked over to the side of the stage, and patiently waited for my chance to return….cause like I said – I have DJ-itis and I can DJ ALL NIGHT LONG!

Times They Are A Changin'
Building off of Dusk's excellent find last night, the in-dash turntable, I thought it was important to note that the latest custom mod to cars uses a MiniMac. This news is a few weeks old, and Gizmodo called it right when it came out, but it's still pretty cool. Another quick nerding note - Google's recent flood of new web tools, GoogleMaps, GoogleLocal, and GoogleMovies is starting to come together, and I think they're really poised to take over that market of the internet. It's so streamlined and self-contained.

Now when you search for something in GoogleLocal, you'll be offered a thumbnail and link to their powerful and awesome GoogleMaps. I've even seen it pop up on the main google search page, while looking for something specific. I'm predicting total domination for Google, using these three (and we can expect more) new tools. Not really surprise to anyone, but I really think they're full of great ideas. Definately a forward thinking solution, instead of the old days of using different niche service providers to work together in displaying info. OK, enough rambling.

Talking On The Subway
I overheard this on the R train this morning.
Girl 1: "So they want me to apply to Yale, they said it was free to apply."
Girl 2: "Word, Yale."
Girl 1: "But I'm like, check out my SAT scores, you know? There's no way. Then they said, yo, look at Princeton. Like we could even afford that in the first place."
Girl 2: "True."
Girl 1: "Anyways, I wouldn't even want to go to school with those people. I want to go to school with gangstas."

Highway Decks

Straight from Gramps. Back in '56, mini turntables were introduced to the latest Chrysler models. They played extra thick 45s at 16 2/3 rpm for up to 60 minutes of the hottest bebop hitting the streets. I know there's a hipster out there with one of these strapped to their bicycle, straight vi-nyl.

Japan Psych Art

The latest in our series of art galleries (catch the earlier ones here, here, here and here) is a collection of Japanese advertisements for psychiatric drugs. Pretty incredible; my favorites are the 70s dreamy ones, like where the giant bird claw is about to snatch the dude. I can relate.
Once again, graphic designers, I am doing your homework for you. Send me a t-shirt when you press them up.

Pricing Out The Gates

Greg.org has a great set of calculations about what he thinks was the real cost of "The Gates." The above picture is supposed to be Christo in his Maybach. (A lot of people pronounce Maybach as May-back. Little known fact: it's pronounced Mai-bach. Always funny when people acting bougie pronounce it incorrectly. "Yo look at that maybach bro!") Anyways, the link below speculates that "The Gates" couldn't have cost more than $10 million. Interesting read. Honestly this post is about "The Gates," so try not to get stuck on the Mayback site too long.
I don't think it's being ungrateful to take a closer look at this $20 million figure. We don't consider it an act of magnanimity when Paramount ponies up $200 million to provide us with the grand collective experience of Titanic. In fact, I believe the Christos' consider the budget to be an important aspect of their work. The artists themselves make a big deal about how much their projects cost, how they don't accept government financing, donations or sponsorships, and how they pay for everything themselves by selling related drawings, models and ephemera.

Remixing Pt. II

Since Ayres's bandwidth was blown to hell this morning by a flood of downloaders looking for their remix fix, you won't be able to cop these beauties until tomorrow.
I don't want anyone to do anything rash, so here's a little gold that'll hold you down when the shakes hit. Prepared by Captain Planet over at Via, this Ciara vs. Yaz is very, very heavy. Perfect when you'e looking for that confounded bridge between old and new.

The Other Jacko
The Media is absorbed with the original Jacko trial, but another less exciting, but more overweight trial may be getting underway. Resident lawyer Caps will have to holler about what this actually means, but it basically appears Peter Jackson is suing New Line for not paying him correctly. A little New Line Birdie tells me:
"Yeah man, it's pretty crazy. I don't have any dirt - we all just kind of rolled our eyes when we saw it. So much for a GREAT relationship with Peter Jackson."
I really don't think New Line, or ahem - Time Warner, is really sweating any of this. After all, the (single) film in question grossed $556 million internationally.

Forget Google Maps, This Time It's Local

I know we've been talking about Google Maps lately, but this one beats it out on the nerd tip for local searches. You can search right down the exact address, and the map system will display your individual building. Pretty handy for trying to find those house parties out in the middle of nowhere. Mapquest is looking pathetic these days.

Remixing
Pitchfork darling Ayres has re-upped with a grip of new remix mp3s. Check them out for sure. Besides my unholy Slim Thug/Faith No More fish-flop, I'm feeling the party host's R. Kelly/Mixalot and Shakeyface's Mannie Fresh/Jimmy Castor the most.
Oh yeah and I would be remiss not to give you a Rub reminder. Another month has melted (kind of) and it's time once again to do it real big. Ayres, Mr. Cosmo Baker and Ruckus Roboticus, who won last year's Rockstar Upload Contest and like a whole bunch of other ones.

SURPRISE REVEALED: and it's ITALIAN DUNKERS.

Yesterday, we promised you "an amazing treasure trove of graphical delights." Today, we deliver.
While you'll quickly realize that the potential uses for these images are infinite - shirts, album covers, avatars, birthday cards, a new exhibit at the Whitney - we like them best as desktops, especially if you rock a big-ass seventeen inch flatscreen like we do. When you stretch these fuckers out so they get nice and pixelly, you can almost smell the government cheese.
And don't even get us started on the policy implications of serving these "meals" to unsuspecting kids every day, man. Whoa. I hope I don't get old enough to see the next generation run shit, especially since they're being raised on "Taco Tubs" and "Chicken Fryz."

Bang bang. 50 cent was involved in some gunplay last night at Hot 97. Details are a little unclear, but a member of his entourage was shot. Last night, local news outlets were reporting it was 50 who was the victim, and that he'd taken a bullet in the leg. I guess not. Is 50 really going to drop The Game from G-Unit? Dude is on some isolationism stuff.
We heard this late last night, but now it's made the papers. I'm sure "Piggybank" had something to do with this. In other news, rappers shooting other rappers is fucking retarded.
