New York City is the prettiest bitch in the class: sexy, cultured, intelligent, rich, and arrogant. So for all the other kids, hating on her whenever possible is a necessity. (For proof, see nearly all surveys and rankings of cities meant to appeal to a national audience.)
Buffalo, meanwhile, is so geeky that s/he becomes the universal standard of geekdom. If someone's breath stinks, you might point this out by saying, "Your breath stinks worse than Buffalo's!" All the other kids will go "ooooooooooo!"
