Tuesday

do-the-right-thing-water.jpg

New York summers are getting notoriously weak. Last year, all of June was rained out, and so far in '05 we've already lost May. Where's the Do The Right Thing type of meltdown I remember from years past? Nowadays, Rosie Perez would need a heatpack, not an ice cube. To warm you up, here's Spike Lee's heat montage, straight from the script:

HOT, HOTTER AND HOTTEST MONTAGE

Right now, folks, we're gonna suspend the narrative and show
how people are coping with the oppressive heat.

People are taking cold showers.

Sticking faces in ice-cold, water-filled sinks.

Heads stuck in refrigerators.

A wife tells her husband, "Hell no, I'm not cooking. It's
too hot. The kitchen is closed."

Men downing six-packs of ice-cold brew.

Faces stuck directly in front of fans.

A young kid cracks an egg on Sal's Cadillac. The moment the
egg hits the car hood it starts to cook. The kid looks
directly INTO THE CAMERA and smiles, then looks up to see
Sal, mad as a motherfucker, chasing after him.

And how can I forget the papers, the newspaper headlines.

New York Post: "A SCORCHER"
New York Daily News: "2 HOT 4 U?"
New York Newsday: "OH BOY! BAKED APPLE"
New York Times: "RECORD HEATWAVE HITS CITY"

Okay, back to the daily grind:

1. Fox News admits bias!

2. Ayres does his part to make sure New York is ready for Devin tha Dude by uploading a gang of mp3s for you and yours.

3. Super dramatic pictures of "fuck off big storms" in Australia over at Tiny Vices (Vice photo editor Tim Barber's site.)

4. Also via Tiny Vices, check out this footage (footy?) of a kayaker vs. a killer whale. EDIT: nope, not really. It's a Korean Powerade commercial.

5. Chi-Kustumz, for all your customized Dipset t-shirt needs. The header on the site has got to be the worst GTA San Andreas knock-off I've seen yet, though. Like real fucking bad.

6. Indiana Jones IV cleared for takeoff.

Sunday Shout

Last night was a LOT of fun. Shout to the 50/60 people who were there until 3:57 AM. Yall killed it. I was just cueing up the whisper song, cause it was like that, and then all of sudden Jones was like Will, it's 3:57. Whoa. Thanks a lot.

Oh yeah: ME AND JONES ARE DOING CAMBRDIGE, MASS REAL BIG WITH THEM CERTIFIED BANANAS DUDES FRIDAY, JULY 1st. GET READY!

Also, a real quick Sunday shout to let everyone know 104 days until jump.

And to make your barbeque action complete tomorrow, be sure to pick up the new mix over at Certified Bananas. p.nice? The Audiovandal? YUP.

ERRRRRRRRRRRY-BODY...

fasttimes.gif

...likes some kind of music. The dude Billy Preston was right. (Audio evidence here.)

That said, all yall need to come out to see me and Jones this Saturday at Savalas. Dranks, skanks, pranks - uh, hi-janks. The manager has given us full license to do/play whatever the hell we feel like, so it'll be big fun. Plus I'll be leaving for Washington like next week so this'll be a kind of send-off. Come through and holler at us.

In other news:

1. A surplus - a fucking CORNUCOPIA - of awesome music Friday night in Manhattan. Let's see: Stretch Armstrong, A-trak & Catchdubs - with Cosmo on the mic! - at Mission, Low B & Junior Vasquez at Eleven, plus them good old Texas boys JD & Elz & Empanadamn at White Rabbit. Holy hell. Parker Lewis can't lose.

2. Fake bananas = cocaine.

3. Huge shout to my man Pilau Hands. We've big-upped him in this space before, but YO - dude made this special piece in honor of Moving in Stereo, and wow we're honored. Thanks Mike! He'll be putting some pieces up for sale in June, right before he makes the move to "The Country," so stay tuned. Like my man sez: "I'm in too deep, losing sleep, I can't call it / In love with this clay shit, loyal and all for it."

4. Morrissey tattoos. Shout to Woody - who, incidentally, has been on a goddamn tear as of late. Holy mackeral.

5. "No Che" t-shirt. Ahhhhhhahahahahahaaaaaaaaaahaha.

6. Drawl Squad got REAL BIG THINGS going on this weekend. Cop their new "definition of drawlin" CD - so, so serious. Plus NickGeez's website is real cool. Check for these dudes.

7. Way, waaaaaaaaay behind on this, but these Mighty Healthy shirts are fucking dope. Jacking for beats.

Is This What It's Come To?

pacademy.jpg
NYC Police Academy. Rookie cop threatened to kill me moments after this.

There is a reason for the lack of content - there's nothing good to post right now - the internets are so not hot right now. No Dipset Google alerts, Gawker is dead, global warming is putting the chokehold on us, and no one hollered with a Triumph video. Catchdubs basically summed up the entire week with his Spector link.

Someone fix the weather, and if you're stuck indoors because of that reason, go ahead and download the freebie DJ Troubl Quasimoto mix at Stones Throw (at the bottom of the homepage.)

"This is not a Quasimoto, Madlib, or Stones Throw release. DJ Troubl has mixed a bunch of Quas tracks together and it is being incorrectly listed as a Quasimoto CD at many locations."

Sway was fun. Thanks Roxy.

Here are some quick-n-dirty links for yall, inspired by Nick's incredible Phil Spector picture.

1. Meathead breathes fire. Looped for your pleasure/disgust. Thanks funkyhello for this incredible field recording.

2. Paulina Rubio at Billboard Latin Music Awards: what the fuck is going on here?

3. Remains of a glyptodon - that's an ancient, eight-foot-long armadillo - found in Peru. Just so you're up on things.

4. Media Martini: funny on some paparazzi shit. Goddamn the Marc Anthony picture is scary. So is the Mary-Kate one. [Via Gawker & Aja.]

5. Urrrrrrrrrrrrrs works out the Bionic Ras rhythm. Beenie Man, Sizzla, Vybz UP TO DA TIME Kartel, Capleton. The usual Ayres high quality. {mp3}

6. Ant's on vacation so Urn steps in with more heat! Via's News & Booze goes tag-team like the Hart Foudation, and everyone wins.

Hey, Look

47.jpg

A nice collection of old photos, most of them as crazy as the one above. Is that a floating golf ball in the background? Reminds me of the pictures Jones found at his store, minus the Greenpoint porn steez. Talk about a mindfuck. My only complaint is the overwhelming presence of whitey.

On a sidenote - anyone seen video of Triumph the Insult Dog visiting The Revenge of the Sith fans? Holler if you got a link.

Minisnippet

Got back on the tape horse. Bored and lazy on a Sunday afternoon with basketball on and then over too soon. One game for the whole day? Yo.

caps: minisnippet {mp3}

Completely ditched the earlier tracklist (see below) in favor of some newish killah kuts and some old gems. (I've had the LA, LA joint in my crates for going on eight years now. WHOA.)

Anyways, this is some lazy shit. I was just stuck in the house on a rainy afternoon by myself. Maybe a work in progress if I get some time. As it stands right now my favorite part is the Mikey/Humphrey intro. Everything else could get the knife at any minute.

TUESDAY EDIT: I took this offline cause I didn't want to give something so unfinished the Nintendo Seal of Quality, but I've put it back up for all yall Lemon-Red readers.

Sundays are Always Bad

brooklyn rain.jpg
Only 111 days until the Bills play again
.

Dude. I'm trying to cram a whole three months of summer vacation into these lousy two weeks before I start work, and the goddamn weather isn't helping. At all.

Rain for the next fucking week.

Here's how I'm (not) coping:

1. By looking at pictures of people having fun in other cities.

Yup, last night was real big in T dot O: Nick, Rory and Diplo went all out for Diplo's super-nice new website and Rory's new mixtape.

What can I say? I am living the vicarious life this afternoon, and it sucks. Glad yall had a good time. Over here in Brooklyn, I'm wondering if maybe there's another Corona left in the fridge for me.

2. Reading about Super Sperm, Earsnot, Ryan McGinley, Irak and jail in The New York Times. Terrifying article -what a fucked-up story- chock full of eye-bugging quotes. Here's one, but read the whole thing: "The ride on the bus to Rikers," he said, "wasn't as romantic as they show in rap videos."

3. Looking at A Silent Flute and thinking about shoes and t-shirts and whatever.

4. Making a mixtape for like an hour then quitting. Remember the feeling from when you were little - like 6 or 7 - and you'd be hanging out alone in your room playing with plasic robots and superheroes, waging an epic conflict and doing the voices for each action figure, making a story, your own mini-movie? Anyways, you'd be totally absorbed, concentrating hard on the action - and then there'd inevitably come that weird moment when you'd all of a sudden get real quiet and weird and deflated, realizing that it was a carpet, not a desert, and that you were still just a little dude hanging out alone.

Anyways, that sad old feeling crept up on me real hard this afternoon as I was making this mixtape all by myself. I was like four tracks in:

INTRO
Mary J. Blige - "You Remind Me" (Puffy Remix)
Milkbone - "Keep It Real"
Aaliyah - "Are You Ready"
OutKast - "Hootie Hoo"
Mobb Deep - "Give Up The Goods"

Everything was going great. I was feeling it, playing all this old shit that Jones isn't always so enthusiastic about, feeling all nice and inspired, making a little soundtrack for summer roof evenings to come, then - nothing.

5. Watching the Dips acting funny. Thanks to Cavebaby for the link.

1. The Texas dude JD directs our attention to Paul Wall on white boy stereotypes. Karats.

2. Shout to everybody who came out on Wednesday night - Jamo & smallfireplace, I see yall! - we had fun. Got it in on all fronts: new Cash Money to Expose to a little Fowl Fight riddim. Plus we were home (and drunk) by 1:30. Love that.

Of course extra thanks to Raf & Michela at interrupcion*, too. Everybody go check them out right now.

3a. Bout a billion free "abandonware" games over here. I know Emil will dig this.

3b. By the way, that dude Emil really kills it every day over there. If you're not checking for him, YOU'RE SLIPPING. (And as my law school people will tell you, it's a slippery little slope.) Wish I could be there for his Memo-rilllllll Day party, cause it'll involve scientifical intergalactic knowledge, bobby brown mics, a drawing of a guy rapping with an X through it, a spankrock roast, and the "beepers" 12". THOROUGH.

4. Finally, I love my girl so damn much. Congratulations to Aja for getting her MASTER'S DEGREE TODAY.

Wednesday

Couple things:

1a. David Cross writes overwrought jokes about Pitchfork's overwrought reviews. Pretty funny though.

1b. In related news, can Pitchfork please get out of the writing about hip-hop/R&B game? Most of their writers are just embarassing themselves. Case in point: when "reviewing" Brooke Valentine's "Girlfight," David Raposa writes:

...the way Ms. Valentine mechanically moans, "We about to throw dem bones," it brings to mind what critic Matt Cibula said about Lil Jon's last album: "it makes me exhilarated and hyper, and then tired and sad immediately afterwards."

Throw dem bones? Dude, just stop.

2. Roxy & Matt bringing DEVIN THA DUDE to New York? WHOA. Details here.

3. If we got rap translations, can we get a rap power point? Saying though: Kelly Clarkson's got one.

Easy Like Tuesday Morning

Back home in Brooklyn. The Bay was big fun; pictures coming from Nash and Dusk real soon. We tried to muster up enough nerd to put something up while in PST - that was the original plan - but then it was like, nah, let's get a burrito. Or drink this beer. Or both.

1. First things first: me and Jones join forces with our people over at interrupcion* tomorrow to have a big old Wednesday night throwdown. Flyer's here. I'm on summer vacation for the next couple weeks so expect lots of happy shit.

2. Did Amerie's 1 Thing just not hit that big in certain pockets of the world? Dropped the Juelz version at the fundraiser Friday, expecting the sizable quotient of inebriated white girls to lose their collective shit (ew), but I got nothing. I think I even heard that little cricket noise they play in cartoons. Tell me, gentle readers: was it me, the crowd, or geographically-provoked disparities in Top 40 radio play throughout the contiguous United States?

For what it's worth, my money's on the crowd. Anytime drunk people don't respond to Shorty Swing My Way into Still Tippin', you know you might as well just break out the Maroon 5 and call it a night. Shit was fun, though, because my man Shan Li can still dance real, real good and they had these free asparagus/prosciutto jumps.

3. This Fernet stuff is my new drink. After drinking a bottle of it and listening to Paul Wall, I remember thinking it was kind of like syrup for European white people - which, somehow, was not a bad thing. Plus it kind of tastes like roots.

4. Huge shout to Gabriella and Ali over at Mama. They make the most thorough R.I.P. shirt ever: Mac Dre, Charizma and Soulja Slim? YES.

5. Low B, Philly's grinding-est (and that's saying a lot), somehow found time to bless the world with a free May mix.

Blast Off

-San-Francisco.jpg

WORD UP.

Finals done, no job till June, sunny Brooklyn, flight west in a few hours.

1. And Radio Clit on the stereo. This shit is ridiculous. Listening to it is like that feeling you get when you're drunk in a foreign country. So good. I think you'll probably have to own this by June 1st at the latest if you want to get maximum summer out of it. Plus the design work is so fucking excellent. Buy it.

2a. More heat, this time from summers past: Me and Jones just put all of Bouillabaisse online. This is our first tape, made in the summer of 2003. Turntable Lab picked it up in March 04 and sold a bunch. Outkast --> Yeah Yeah Yeahs --> Big Country --> David Banner. Juelz v. Squarepusher. You should download it.

2b. Moving in Stereo tracklisting is up, too.

3. Shout to chlorophyll. Such a good look.

4. Bills to introduce a THIRD JERSEY. In related news: I am sixty dollars broker. Meanwhile, #34 is going up on the Wall of Fame. Like: "What? Yall thought yall wasn't gon SEE ME? I'm the old Thurman of this shit..."

5. Some dude goes for it. Ouch. Shout to gekiganger for the link.

6. Pat Robertson wants to kiss King Tut.

Finally, Tenth Division sets the tone.

Dang

Short week for The Stencil: finals end Wednesday, then on Thursday the whole crew is off to the Sucka Free City aka THE MOTHERFUCKING BAY AREA. Me and Nash'll be spinning records at a private fundraiser for the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation on Friday, then on Saturday we'll holler at the dude Diplo at the Fillmore, then Sunday is the infamous Bay To Breakers.

1. Worst Rub to miss ever? Maybe: A-Trak looks to have been in fine form.

2. Watch BCAT (Brooklyn's Public Access channel) anywhere! Thanks to Loco for the link.

3. Big shout to nickgeez from Dork. Unbeknownst to me, dude was half the magic behind those Jamo tracks I put up last week, so credit is due. If you haven't already, I recommend checking for them - particularly the Kelly Clarkson/Soulsonic shit. Silly & well-done; an ace combination. Stay tuned cause me and Jones are gonna get up with these dudes (DRAWL SQUAD) this summer. Speaking of, one of yall needs to holler at us with a copy of that Power Hour mixtape!

4. Speaking of mixtapes, Moving in Stereo update: YEAH MAN! We're now on our third re-stock over at Kim's, we get paypal orders every damn day, and whenever the Lab gets their May update up, we'll be firmly ensconced in their CD section, and not relegated to page 3 of the Daily Shipments like we are now. But yeah, shit is AWESOME. Me and Jones are like Bartles & Jaymes over here: WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. For real.

Basically, what Nick said.

5. Finally, check out this Spankrock video. Epic.

The All Day Buffet

It's only once in a while I have the chance to link to something as amazing as what you're about to read. Recall the post from a few days ago regarding the unnamed giant eating his gigantic burger? Turns out dude has a website, an album, competitive eating titles, TV appearances, and a name: Badlands Booker.

His website is a total mindfuck. Check out the graphic below. "Everything you wanted to know about a hot dog but was afraid to ask!" (no homo)

Doesn't that amazing Photoshop filter work make you want to hear that record so bad? Download the "Sweet Science" MP3 here, and more here. This shit is blazin'!!!!! I'm gonna leave you with a real ass quote from Badlands..

UPDATE! Caps has just informed me that Badlands Booker is wearing a BUFFALO BILLS HAT in one of the photos. Check the photochopping below for proof of this dramatic development.

$3000 Minimum, Please

blvdguy.jpg

Tale of Two Cities has a hilarious post about a douche (see above photo) and his adventures with bottle service, all taken from a Food Network show called "What's Hot! What's Cool!" Yeah, that's really the name of the show; "What's Hot! What's Cool!" We saw our fair share of these types last weekend, and none of them appeared to be having any fun whatsoever. I am not hating. You can see some in the background of the third photo here, behind the butt.

"Simply put, we love him. Whether it was his thrift store T that probably cost more than $200, or his meaningless-yet-skillfully-crafted tattoos, on first glance we knew we were in for something special. And we were. He had relatively few things to say, but they were all deeply meaningful, so we reprint them in their entirety in this space."

Wonsday

YO. Saw MIA on Jimmy Kimmel last night right before I went to sleep. MIA was just okay - maybe kinda beat after Coachella? looked a little sleepy - and Diplo was grinning and everything, but the REAL story was the cracked-out camera tricks they got nowadays. Made my 24-y-o self feel fucking ancient! I mean, there was like this rapid stutter superzoom in/out thing they kept doing - like ten times more potent than the old Wayne's World shit, I mean like really, really intense. Then they had some weird "blurry acid trip" effect where everything started melting together, like "whoa man it's diplo and he's part of the record whoaaaa" - and then, just to make sure you were totally fucked, they kept cutting to this fattish ex-raver white dude who was kinda gyrating a little bit. The cumulative effect was completely nauseating. With camera technology like that in producer's hands, it's a good thing they don't have The Grind anymore or 12-year-olds would be catching after-school seizures. Whatever though - I'm sure it went over real big in Oklahoma, where "Bucky Done Gun" probably sounds like an alien broadcast from Planet Awesome and MIA looks/sounds like Nothing You've Ever Seen Before But You Want More.

ANYWAYS.

1. Caps and Jones DOTCOM updated. A real temporary placeholder thing, but this should hold you down until we get out of exams. Downloads, live appearances, all that. Speaking of LIVE, me and Jones are doing it real big for Roxy this Friday at 217 Bowery. It's her new party, EASTSIDE GANGBANG, and it was a lot of fun last week when SpankRock and Lowbudget set it off. This week, we're downstairs, and the legendary LORD SEAR is upstairs. Come out and get with us, man. Pretty-ass flyer over here. Free Red Stripe 10-11.

2. The dude Jamo sent us a couple of mp3s of wild shit he's cooked up. Excellent goofy summer shit here - like being high at the County Fair with your crew, walking past the Tilt-A-Whirl with too many beats in your head.

Soulsonic Kelly - Jamo {mp3}
Tippin Vanilli - Jamo {mp3}

Doctor's warning, though - Kelly Clarkson WILL echo in your ears for hours.

3. Bunch of cats - including our boy Chris Lemon-Red - got together for Purpology, a new music video we-blog.

4. Ayres and Cosmo and Eleven just got back from California, where they brought The Rub to the people. Whole grip of chicken-n-waffle related photo documentation over here.

5. Speaking of the esteemed Rub faculty, they are back in Brooklyn on Saturday with DMC champ/Kanye's record-spinner, the one and only A-Trak. Don't sleep!

6. Big shout to our new friends a silent flute (BODYMORE IN THE BUILDING) and false crack (BERKELEY WHAT'S GOOD). Each of them keeps it very, very thorough and updates like CNN. Check for them.

7. The Simpsons' house made manifest! (via The Copyright Convention)

Sitting On 62s

thebuffalompcv.jpg

The U.S. military does not play. Neither does their latest MPCV, aptly named the "Buffalo." If my number hits this week, expect to see this on the streets immediately.

One innovation the U.S. military has used in the Baghdad area in recent weeks is a heavily armored vehicle dubbed the "Buffalo." It has a V-shaped undercarriage to minimize the effect of an explosive charge, as well as small blast-proof windows. An attached mechanical arm is maneuvered by the six-man crew to check out suspected roadside bombs and, when confirmed, holds them harmless until a bomb disposal team can reach the site and disarm them.

In Honor of National NH Day

fruity.jpg

Who remembers DJ Chill Will from the Eastside*?

I do. Here's a weird remix he did in 1993 for Strickly Roots. You get vintage Joey Crack, Grand Pu rhyming hard (nh**), Strickly Roots going for theirs, and then Chill Will gets on the mike for the weirdest hypeman shit ever:

My ni**as uptown get fruity
My ni**as in the Bronx, know they get fruity
Brooklyn and Queens, know they gettin fruity

Then Chill Will FTE drops a real verse: "I get fruity, but I ain't sweet so don't sleep."

Damn! Where was NH 12 years ago, when it could have saved lives? Thank God it's here now and no one ever gets anyone's masculinity/sexuality twisted. NH.

Hip-hop and Seed Bags (n/h)

Sky over brooklyn looks like it's bout to get Hurricane Starang in a matter of minutes. I should run out and grab that falafel now. Too late: now raining.

1) Our boy Ant from VIA points us towards these cool little bags of seeds that kids hang on fences to re-greenify urban space. (Yup: "greenify." My word.) The scale of this idea is very cool.

2) byroncrawford.com killing it dead every damn day. Yesterday was ghetto prom pictures. Today he and djxplicit announce National No Homo Day. For those uneducated few who read this (hi mom), it's not what you think it is. nhjic.
Preemptive no homo: all of us at The Stencil got together and talked about this, and we fully endorse. NH.

3) If you're like us, you're thinking nonstop about the elements of our hip-hop culture. Like Kris Parker, we keep it so fucking real over here with the elements, duke. For real Nash is downstairs working on his freezes right now and my hands are sticky from the krylon because I just pieced the Kosciuszko Bridge. After I write this, me and Dusk are laying down some lyrics on the track. Being immersed in the culture, you therefore understand that we are constantly streaming breakdancing wmvs like this one. KEEP IT REAL

Sunday Night

night stars.jpg

Been a minute cause I had to take my Fed. Courts exam. Shout to Dusk & Nash for holding it up. Like Atlas on that Van Halen vibe. Real pretty in here now, and way more target: blanks going on.

1) World-famous turntable allstar DJ/rupture says very nice things about Moving in Stereo. Thanks! Huge gratitude to Chris for making the introduction.

2) Speaking of Lemon-Red, the young man is taking over. Rookie of the Year. You caught him in Nerve spewing sex talk, obvs. And Gawker. Next stop? Word has it our man is about to get up in the tangible world - that's right, THE GODDAMN PRINTED PRESS. Stay tuned!

3) Buy Rapid Ric's "Whut It Dew 2" right now. Me and Nash and Pad haven't been this obsessed with a hip-hop mixtape since high school. (I think last one was Dirty Harry's "In The Line of Fire.") Buy a shirt too.

4) My man Pilau Hands aka FITTS aka huglife aka Mike is very nice with his glaze. Check out his exceptionally dope pottery over here. This one is my favorite.

5) The Buffalo Bills' favorite QB savior, young J.P. Losman, looks a lot like Adam Sandler, for reeeeeeeal.

6) Because it's Sunday night, and because every weekend me and Jones come home and play this song at like five in the morning, here's Brian Wilson & Van Dyke Parks' forever classic, Surf's Up. I've got the old one, but this is new one cause PJ's vinyl is too scratchy - too real! - for this modern world. So lovely. See yall tomorrow.
