Lindy Ruff: Coach of the Year

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Lindy Ruff was cradling the wrong trophy, one he had said was an afterthought to the one that truly mattered.

Yet up there on the stage of the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts, standing in a tuxedo before the people who matter most in hockey and the adults who matter most in his life, Ruff's voice wavered.

Ruff, having guided the Buffalo Sabres through a multitude of injuries to within one period of the Stanley Cup finals while trying to cope with a nightmarish diagnosis that his 11-year-old daughter had a brain tumor, was honored Thursday night with the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's best coach.
