1. The pictures coming out of Gaza are terrifying. The hate in this old man's eyes - fuck. The energy drinks. The weirdly cinematic office poses.
Andrew Sullivan makes interesting points here about the ramifications of Hamas' rise for the Republican rationales for staying in Iraq:
But, ahem, what are we doing [in Iraq] now? We discovered that the WMD issue was a chimera or a lie. We removed and had Shiite goons execute the dictator. We tried to construct a constitutional order for a non-dictatorial, national political settlement. History will judge whether the subsequent disaster was a function of a hard task screwed up or an impossible task screwed up. But right now, we have done all we wanted to originally accomplish, except, of course, anything close to a stable state. So what is the rationale for staying?
According to the Republican candidates, it is because leaving would make matters worse (even Rudy Giuliani isn't foolish enough to repeat the democracy objective). How worse? The emergence of a failed state where al Qaeda and other Islamist mass-murderers could regroup and thrive. Well ... now look at Gaza.
Meanwhile, 5 more US soldiers dead in Iraq yesterday. 3,520 and counting; fallout from the second bombing of Samarra's al-Askariya mosque coming hard.
2. My beloved Sabres bring Darcy and Lindy back into the fold for another couple of years, ensuring that Buffalo's front office maintains its hockey-name dominance. Now that Darcy's back for sure, can we please get some movement on Briere, Drury and Vanek? Killin me over here, and the Bills don't start training camp for another six weeks. Relatedly, Lindy missed out on getting his second straight Jack Adams Award (aka "best coach") Tuesday night, but he lost to the dude from Vancouver so it's cool. (Shout to Vancouver - including those Vancouverites now living elsewhere!) Lindy's still the winningest coach in Sabres history. This time next year, I plan on posting pictures from the Stanley Cup parade down Delaware. Yee-haw.
