New Group Launches "Stay the Course" Ads

vietnamcartoon.jpg

While Bush is busy lecturing the country on how we should have stayed longer in Vietnam (a war, you'll remember, so beloved by a young Bush that he spent it getting drunk in Texas with the "Champagne Unit"), a new group called Freedom's Watch - call them the right's answer to MoveOn.org - is gearing up to launch a $15m ad blitz, coming soon to televisions in twenty states.

If you're a glutton for mindless fearmongering and jingoistic propaganda, you can watch the ads here. If not, here's the rundown courtesy of Steve Benen:

There are four different ads, each more offensive than the last. In one, a veteran who lost a leg is shown arguing that we have to stay in Iraq because "they attacked us." In the next, a mother of a fallen soldier (who apparently doesn't mind being exploited by the right-wing smear machine) argues that we'll invite another 9/11 unless we stay in the middle of Iraq's civil war.

In fact, they're even worse than that description implies. Besides the tastelessly obligatory shots of planes hitting the World Trade Center - because, as you no doubt remember, it was Saddam and Co. behind 9/11, or haven't you been paying attention? - there's also lots of words like "MORE ATTACKS" and "NO SURRENDER" flashing on screen, just in case you didn't quite understand that, as Freedom's Watch puts it, "victory is America's only choice."

Meanwhile, Democrats in Congress have picked the worst time to start acting skittish about ending this nightmare, just as we head into this crucial September...

I'm nauseous.

Fuck, man; just when you think things can't get worse. It's been so long.
